Towards

a site specific installation

My newest work will be opening today, during Art-a-Whirl in Northeast Minneapolis.

This site specific installation presented by Spotart Gallery was actually created in response to a strange little hidden room which lost its utility after a remodel. The piece explores light and color both natural and manmade, imagery both banal and surreal, objects found as well as fabricated, and is my first foray into using the ungovernable element of live plants. I'm pretty excited, and also slightly terrified about this last part. The room will look different throughout the day depending on the weather and hour of light.

The piece will be up for about 5 weeks, so you have plenty of time to see it, however, if you would like to visit I will be around plenty this weekend. The other artists showing in the gallery are presenting some truly amazing work so this is definately worth a stop in. In fact there are even two receptions-- this Friday and Saturday night, May 20 & 21, from 7-11pm. As well, I will be gallery sitting Saturday after 3pm for a few hours. If you are out art-a-whirling, come say hi.

Skewed Visions presents the second episode of Cubicle2. Created by a different artist each month, these online experiments are original creations on the theme of identity in the age of the internet.

This second episode of this new season is by local artist Avye Alexandres. Her piece, The Anamorph Aether; a quintessent collage, explores the construction of identity of self and place through the ruptures and mergings that technology makes possible between the virtual and the physical. From the warmth of one's bed to the vast clattering emptiness of multiple virtual landscapes, The Anamorph Aether is a voyage through the veil that separates who we are from what we have created.

Personal note:

I am quite honored to have created this piece for the Cubicle series. As well, I am so excited to be sharing the bill with the other 11 artists who are involved in this years season. Announcing! Exhibition at Weisman Art Museum! (or... what I've been up to for 10 months)

For the past 10 months I have been planning and creating my first interactive art installation. It is now on view at the Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis as a part of the Art(ists) on the Verge 2008-2009 fellowship exhibition. The Opening Reception is this Thursday at 8pm and features performances by 3 of the other AOV fellows. The exhibition itself is on view until August 23rd. If you are in the area I hope you will get a chance to come check it out. (the reception should be a really awesome event, and I highly reccomend it, if you can squeeze it in... sorry for the last minute notice)

This installation, entitled Once, is my first experimentation with non-performative interactivity. I have incorporated my photographic and theatrical sensibilities to create a space in which the viewer becomes a participant or character within the artwork:

Once is a mixed media, immersive installation that functions as memory might. Placing the viewer on the precipice of control over an ephemeral space, it aims to incite questions about the placement, origins, and malleability of our memories.

Artists on the Verge 2008-2009 at the Weisman Art Museum features works or documentation of works made by the inaugural group of Art(ists) on the Verge fellows. Installations of all six commissions are included. Artists are Aniccha Arts (Pramila Vasudevan, Director), Avye Alexandres, Christopher Baker, Kevin Obstatz, Andrea Steudel, and Krista Kelley Walsh.

Art(ists) on the Verge (AOV) is a new Northern Lights fellowship program that supports Minnesota-based, emerging artists working experimentally at the intersection of art and technology, with a focus on practices that are social, virtual and/or participatory. The program is sponsored by the Jerome Foundation.

In September 2008 a jury consisting of Liz Armstrong (The Minneapolis Institute of Art), Steve Dietz (Northern Lights), Ben Heywood (Soap Factory), Ana Serrano (Canadian Film Center Media Lab), and Anu Vikram (Headlands Residency Program) selected 6 artists for AOV fellowships. This exhibition represents the culmination of the fellowship year.

Three blocks Home (an update)

Today after rehearsal a friend dropped me off 3 blocks from my house. This is what it sounded like.

So perhaps this isn't the most interesting thing you could be listening to. But perhaps you are at work walled off from the sunlight and bored of streaming options. Take a break. Pretend you are taking a walk rather than staring at your computer screen.

Well it's been quite a while since I've posted. Here's some of what i've been up to:

I have been really into documenting little funny bits of my life lately.

I've started a new simple photo series with my point & shoot called "Dailies". A photo a day commemorating some little moment. Feels very freeing to not take my imagemaking so seriously- some of the photos arent that great, sometimes the highlights are blown or are taken in barely any light, but they are still little documents that remind me of the day. (ok, so some of them are diptychs and triptychs and took a little more effort than others) Anyway I am really soaking in the summer this year, spending alot of time out in the sun with good people and this series is a kind of celebration/reflection of each day, good or bad. I plan to continue it past this summer, perhaps all my life, but at least for the next year.

In more serious photo news I've been photographing my apartment. (i guess its only more serious because I'm using my SLR, tripod etcetc) Kind of funny that I'm starting this. I spend enough time holed up in my little sanctuary as it is, do I really need to make images of it? But I call it a sanctuary because I love it. Been thinking about how it is always in flux. So far that is what I have been finding through the camera.
These images probably wont make it up on here for a while though. Too much else to do.... such as--- getting ready for two photo shows and applying for grants. Come mid-September my work will be up on walls in Minneapolis (SpotArt) and St. Paul (Concordia University)!

And now maybe I should get back to that ToDo list.

I am related to this amazing woman.

How do I know she is amazing? Well, I don't really. But look at her eyes, that expression, that poise. She HAS to be amazing and well, if not, that's one tricky photographer.

Two weeks ago I was staying at my grandma's house with my mother when I found this photograph. We are not sure exactly who she is, not many of the photos are labeled, but she is likely on my grandfather's side of the family who owned a grocery store and a bank around the turn of the century.

This "Birth Control Handbook" was published in its 12th edition in 1974 by a Canadian Press.
These are the front and back pages. I would be quite amazed to find anything comparably illustrated today. The pamphlets we find today in our doctors offices seem to make such a concerted effort to be as clinical and dry as possible. I think of the "shower card" I have hanging in my bathroom that reminds me to do a monthly self breast exam from the American Cancer Society: Pink lettering with a little illustration of a woman- little dashes behind her signify the shower water- holding one arm above her head while her other hand presses on her chest as far away from her actual breast as possible. Her head also faces as far away from her breast as possible. It's kind of humorous in its cartoonyness. Anyway, its seems indicative of all the health literature illustrations today (that I've ever seen.) So when I came across this handbook in my grandmother's house, I was amazed and kinda of struck by it's "daring" to publish such photographs in a clinical publication.

Here is another photograph from page 13. I mean really! look at this! Its not a diagram but a beautiful image about sex in a health handbook ! Forgive me if i sound redundant, but it's just seems so amazing. Now, years and years after (the Second) Women's movement, sex is visually represented as this clinical thing. What happened to the beauty of it? is that being taught? .... Who knows, perhaps if it were sex would be regarded as a little more sacred.

And finally here is another moody/beautiful photograph. There are also anatomical diagrams in the handbook and even though they are diagrams, there is something still moody to them, sensual even. I suppose it is because they are more than simple line drawings. They use shading and the artist's name is even signed along the edge of the drawing.

I can see why this publication decided to use such subjective images of sex and child birth..... the introduction reads:

"When a woman and a man use birth control, they affirm that the goal of their sexual intercourse is mutual pleasure and delight, not reproduction. It is our basic human right to be able to find such delight in each other, and it is our human responsibility not to make an unwanted child the result of our most personal pleasures"

Well said!
hmmm.... though these photos seem a bit dated and the drawings rather intimate to the point of oddly uncomfortable, I wish such a sensitive publication were being distributed now.

PS. I have become a bit of an old camera collector these past few years. It began when my Grandmother gave me a whole mess of my grandfather's old cameras. One of my favorites is the stereoscopic camera this image was taken with. Stereoscopic photographs are two images next to one another that are viewed through a viewer that joins them to create a 3-d experience. To learn more check out Wikipedia. And while I would have liked to scan both images in and present them above as a true stereoscopic 'print', I decided against it because I have just sooo many slides to scan in. And anyway, the images are what are important, not the tech.

This looks to be one of the earliest letters my grandfather wrote my grandmother. He was in the Navy. It is postmarked the day the Battle of Guadalcanal started. At least at that point my grandmother knew that he was not there. Its amazing to imagine only having contact by mail.

* my grandfather was quite a hobbyist. As well as developing his own film in his darkroom downstairs, he also made his own wine from grapes he grew out behind the house. We found quite an array of experiments: dandelion wine, tomato wine, beet wine... all scrawled onto tape on the bottles, some completely sealed, others half full. This is part of a new series (currently untitled) which documents the process of cleaning out my grandmother's house after moving her to an Alzheimer's nursing home. My grandparents built this house themselves and raised six children in it. Part of the series is interiors of their home in a state of change, the other part is my family going through all of the things in the house to prepare it to sell.
For me the process of making this series is about alot of things. It is about trying to understand aging, memories and home. It is about trying to piece together memories of lives that are not mine. I wonder if that is sort of what Alzheimer's feels like. Ultimately I think the series is about letting go; letting go of possessions, of home, of loved ones. Letting go of grievances, regrets and joys.... all those things that make one's existence in a place in this world. Is that a little ironic? That I'm taking photographs to make a series about letting go? Well, anyway, I'm sure I will call it by several other themes before it is over.

One last note: Some images from this series will be used in a performance piece I am creating. It will be part of the New Works: Four Weeks at the Red Eye Theatre on June 8th- June 10th. Therefore, as I am assembling material for this piece, I would really appreciate any comments anyone may have. You dont have to give a critique or anything, just anything that comes to your mind. If a photo reminds you of something or gives you a specific feeling... whatever you like, I'd be interested in hearing it. Anyone should be able to post comments here.

Today I stumbled upon another photographer chronicling photographs not taken. His project is called Unphotographable. His reasons for doing this project are essentially similar to mine.... only he has been at it alot longer than I have. His style is markedly different from mine though. His text images are not as isolated as I aim to make mine. They include more visual and situational information and imply time passing. I would say that the descriptive words he uses are less objective than I make mine (or try to). Also, he will often comment on how things seem. These are not critisisms of his style, I find his style interesting, just a comparison to mine. . . . . . I could write more, but I think that instead I will boil down the difference to comparing a short story to a haiku; where he dissects everything that is happening, I simply pick out the key elements..... (or try to)...... or perhaps it is the difference between a long and a shallow depth of field......

A friend of mine called me the day of the bridge collapse after we had exchanged text messages ensuring we were both safe. He said some thing to the effect of "i have a project idea that you might be interested in.... well it has to do with disasters. ... what are the aesthetics of disasters? and what do they do to us...... when 9.11 happened i felt suddenly so patriotic, which is unusual for me...... today i have gotten so many phone calls, text messages, emails, just people reaching out..." so after telling me that photography would obviously be a good addition to this project we did the usual 'yes, lets get together and talk about life soon.... as soon as this calms down and before that starts back up'
I'm not entirely sure what his project will entail, he sent out a mass email asking "what good can come from this?" Knowing him, i'm sure it will be an interesting collection of thoughts, essays, articles etc.....
So prior to this telephone conversation i had not really considered going down there to try to take pictures. I knew it was chaos down there and not being a member of the press it would certainly be 'gawking,' and would possibly interfere. Plus the whole idea made me uncomfortable. but after this conversation i seemed to be given some sort of permission (why am i like that?)

So this morning i rode my bike down to the river to see what i could see. I started at the Franklin bridge knowing that i likely wouldnt see anything, but needed a warm-up. Crossing back over to the west bank i saw what looked like a wrecked white car on the edge of the water. i made a mental note and kept going. the 10th avenue bridge which ran directly next to 35W bridge was closed off. ducking behind the holiday inn and down the road past the small parking garage, that was blocked off too. i headed back to washington ave past TV vans and trailers. Looking down from the overpass onto 35W before it becomes the bridge, i saw a few men in bright yellow reflective gear and a few trucks, but still no view of the collapse.
Further along on washington i turned right towards the river and there were some barricades and an official looking woman asked if she could help me. i said i was trying to get across and she pointed and said to take the 3rd avenue bridge. On my way i passed a park i had never seen before. Sidewalks bisecting amazingly green grass led up small hill and promised a view of the river. A small crowd of people looked out. "this is it" i thought, "this is what i need to photograph.... the people looking" Now i didnt bring my camera with me because i just wanted to find out the likelyhood of actually seeing something, but i headed up out of curiosity. Most people were in groups chatting about it and holding their hands above their eyes to shield the sun as they looked out. And then i saw a woman who obviously had had the same idea as me; she was shooting the people looking. When her lens neared me i quickly turned around and headed back down. On my way out of the park a man said "Can you see anything from up there?" somehow this made me feel cheap, and 'gawking' came into my head once again. "no" i said and continued up the river.
I turned into the Guthrie and walked my bike down the steps to a patch of dried grass and weeds that stood high on the bank overlooking West River Road. More people were there, hands shielding their eyes. "Christa! come on back up" a man shouted and then turned to finish his conversation about a bridge in St.Paul where concrete fell onto a walking path and how southern Minnesota ones are even worse. People were walking up and down the steep bank to the edge of the river where rec. paths and River Rd. were blocked off. I headed down via the road past photographers touting cameras with lenses as thick as my leg. At the bottom, a camera man must have been getting something as he was all set up on a tripod and intently watching the camera..... but at this point i was much more interested in the people walking around trying to see the collapse.
The Stone Arch bridge was closed too but plenty of people were walking up to it just to hear the policeman say, once again, "the bridge is closed." Past the Stone Arch, people were walking to and from their cars in a small parking lot, or obviously trying to maintain their usual jogging routes despite all the closures. On my left, a tour group riding strange little motorized platforms on two wheels; the riders held onto a steering wheel that came straightup from the platform. They buzzed past me single file, standing amazingly straight and silent, some with wide smiles. Now i wished i had brought my camera.
On the way back home i detoured onto the U of M ped & bike bridge but it was also too far down the river and past a bend to see anything. I overheard a woman walking by say into her phone "..... computer generates bridge structures...." and on the way back i saw a girl with red eyes glance to her left up the river.
I took river road back home, thinking of the white car...... i didnt see it though and wondered if i had imagined it. not unlikely.
tomorrow... the camera comes with.
